Prepare For Descent!

Pyro GXDescentiaPedia ReFactor

After playing Descent: First Strike (Lunar Outpost), by Argos and Aheyweh Gate for D3, by Dark Falcon (both highly recommended, by the way) I decided to make a series of levels that would recreate the play style of D1 and D2. But, I did not want to copy any level, nor did I want to spend many hours recreating sounds, bots, and textures. What I was after was to build levels that could be played through in less than an hour or so, and that I could build in a few weeks. (actually took me six weeks, but hey... who's counting?) Simple levels that would be fun in a not too serious way. ReFactor isn't big on story or puzzles, but neither is it a copy of Descent 1 or Descent 2 levels. I haven't really planned anything out, I just build as I go. The first level, Refactored, is now done.

Download:
ReFactor (ReFactor.zip, version: 1.1, 4,789kb)
4/27/07:v1.1 adds 3 additional player starts and COOP keyword to facilitate co-op testing.

Known bugs:
Sound cutoff at one portal. Will be fixed.
COOP: The scripting calls for the level to terminate in failure after three deaths, but this causes the server to crash so I'll have to fix that for coop.
COOP: Matcens not working.
COOP: Vortex reports auto-download link broken. I am guessing due to the wikki action used on this page, I'll have to try ftp'ing to a regular folder.
And not exactly bugs, but...
Level was lit using 'Test Mode' lighting settings. Most areas look ok, but there are a few areas where the lighting does not blend well from one room or face to another. Specifically in the area of the energy center it's noticeable. However, this will not be fixed until I get a faster computer.
Music is too repetitious, and does not always change regions when it should. I will work on that and release a new version.
Also, if you have aborted the mission, then try to play it again, without restarting D3, the level may ding on start. (press the escape key to return to desktop) This is common in levels with custom stuff, you have to close D3 and restart it. If you fail or finish the level, then you won't have this problem. I'm told that this is a bug in D3, and can't be fixed.
Please let me know if you find others.

Notes:
Just to add a little more tension to the game, you must respawn within forty seconds after death or the mission will fail. And you only get three lives. Use them up and the mission terminates in failure.
GuideBot will not help you find the hostages or the keys. Also, the hostages can be killed! One flare will kill them, or the blast from a nearby explosion. The CED wants these men alive!

The energy center texture is from Novacron.

Objectives
The objectives are pretty simple... You need to rescue the four hostages, then blow the reactor. There are two keys, red and blue, that you will need to find in order to gain access to restricted areas of the mine. Once you are in the red area you will need to destroy four energy pumps to gain access to the reactor. Destroy the reactor to gain access to the emergency exit, then get out quick.

From MD's log: Four former PTMC scientists had been secretly working to continue Dravis' work on the virus, but it got loose and now they are being held hostage in the mine. Guess which sucka gets to go rescue their sorry asses? And just to rub a little salt in the wound, the CED wants them alive, hoping they will cooperate and share their knowledge of the virus. Well at least the CED pays their hired guns on time.

I opened the door and these stupid stormtroopers were beating the crap out of each other... and the other bots in this room. So I let the door close and waited a bit. Guess what... they were still going at it! Finally they saw me at the door and came racing over.
