Descent 3 Multi Player
Getting Started
Patch your game to 1.4
To play Descent 3 online, you will need to patch your game to 1.4, available at either
Planet Descent∞, under 'Files', or from
Descent3.com∞. BTW, you may come across a 1.5 patch. It was never 'officially' released, and is not recommended, as it is reported to introduce new bugs. Generally, you won't find servers running 1.5, so if you do apply 1.5, you won't be able to play online. Pretty much only 1.4 is played online.
Finding Servers
Then you should get either
Vortex∞, which has a nice feature of auto downloading levels, or
KQuery∞, either are easy to set up and use, there is a tut for KQuery at
Suncho Dot Com.∞ A third option, which does not require downloading software, is to visit
D3.Descent.cx Game Browser.∞ Vortex is currently the best way to connect. It is actively supported and updated, and includes a few features you won't find elsewhere.
Connect
Set your firewall to allow main.exe
and vortex, if your using it to access the internet. Vortex includes a really cool feature that alows you to download and install levels from within vortex, so you don't need to worry about not having a particular map. If the name is in red in the browser, when you try to join you will be given the opportunity to download it. It will install automatically.
Setup D3
Before you connect to a game there is one setting to change in your D3 setup. Open D3, and click on 'Setup', then the 'Network' tab. Recently there has been a move to... uhm, I forget why, but if you do not select the 'T1' setting in D3, you will get booted from
most servers for being under the packet minimum size.
more later... if you have specific questions, feel free to post them here...
