Converting D1 and/or D2 levels to D3
This should not be too difficult, but it will be a lot of work.
These are the steps involved, details to follow:
The latest version of D3Editor should be obtained from DescentForum.de∞, LevelView and Dxf2Orf from Planet Descent∞.
1) Open a level in 'LevelView'.
2) Save it as a dxf.
3) Use 'Dxf2Orf' to convert it to an orf.
4) Open the orf in D3Editor.
5) Divide the single room into multiple rooms.
6) Repair the rooms, re-texture.
Converting D1 level 1 produced a room with 500 non-planer faces, 1 concave face, about half the faces had reversed normals, and all the textures are default texture. The entire level is just over 1000 faces total. Another issue I thought of, but haven't investigated is whether the level would need to be enlarged or reduced in sized. Might be a good idea to fix the single room, import into a D3 level, and test fly to check on this. I think it would be easier to resize the level while it is a single room.
- I fixed all the faces of D1 level 1 converted to a single room and test flew. I think it feels a bit smaller than it should be. It's been years since I have played D1 and I don't remember all the details of the texturing and placement of bots and objects. - WillyPs
7) Make custom doors.
8) Re-attach the rooms and doors as a D3 level.
9) Add bots, power-ups and other objects.
10) Script as needed.
