Prepare For Descent!

I've just recently installed D2, and D2x-xl on two computers... D2 seemed to run fine on both, but no usb joystick support meant no joystick on this one... and I wanted see all Diedel's amazing upgrades for D2 anyway, so I installed D2x-xl on both machines.

1: Asus P5w DH Deluxe, Pentium D 960, 3.6Ghz. 2gb, and a XFX Geforce 7600GT Fatal1ty. Runs D2x-xl at highest detail settings, 1280x1024 resolution. Control: Logitech Extreme 3D pro & keyboard. I use the stick in my left hand, and right hand on the keyboard.
I ran into one snag installing D2x-xl on this machine. D2 worked fine, but D2x-xl would crash shortly after opening. I went to D2X-xl support on Sourceforge∞ and opened a bug ticket but nothing Diedel suggested worked. But then while poking around in my video settings, I noticed the color depth was set to 16 bit! So I changed it back to 32 bit and then it worked. LOL!

2: Asrock 1.8Ghz, 512Mb, onboard video. D2 and D2X-xl installed without a hitch. This machine is not playable at high detail and resolutions. I settled on the medium setting for detail and 1024x768 resolution, but it's still a little choppy... unfortunately, since the control polling is per frame, a low framerate means sluggish controls as well. I'll have to play with the settings some more. Although what this machine really needs is a video card!

I was not able to get a lan game going between the two machines... I am going to try again... after the kids go to bed, lol!

I've also installed the GOG version of Descent and Descent 2. It comes packaged in a self installer, with a pre-configured version of Dos Box. Unfortunately, that means limited joystick support. Reports on the GOG forum indicate that installing the GOG data files with the open source executable does indeed work... I'll try that and report my results here!
